Gombe Stream National Park is Tanzania’s smallest national park, covering just 52 square kilometers along the pristine shores of Lake Tanganyika. This narrow forested strip is world-famous as the site of Jane Goodall’s pioneering chimpanzee research, and visitors come here to observe habituated chimpanzees in their natural environment.
Due to its dense forest habitat, large game species are absent, but the park thrives with unique primates and diverse birdlife, offering an intimate and specialized wildlife experience.
Gombe’s wildlife is dominated by primates and birds, including:
Primates: chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys
Other mammals: grey duikers, bushbucks, bushpigs
Birds: trumpeter hornbills, Roos’s turacos, crowned eagles, narrow-tailed starlings, and many more
The park’s rich biodiversity makes it a hotspot for primatologists, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts alike.
Gombe Stream offers a range of immersive experiences:
