Mount Ol'doinyo Lengai

Mount Oldoinyo Lengai

Oldoinyo Lengai, a Maasai name meaning the “Mountain of God,” is an active volcanic mountain located in the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley. It is the only active volcano in the world that produces Natrocarbonatite lava — a rare, cool-flowing, and fast-hardening type of lava unique to this region.

The journey from Arusha to Oldoinyo Lengai takes approximately 4 hours by road, passing through beautiful Maasai villages and the stunning landscapes of the Rift Valley. Rising from the arid valley floor, the mountain stands tall at 2,886 meters (9,469 feet).

Your adventure begins around midnight with a steep 6-hour climb, aiming to reach the summit in time for a spectacular sunrise. From the crater rim, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of:

  • Lake Natron – a vast alkaline lake shimmering in shades of pink and red, home to thousands of flamingos.

  • The Great Rift Valley Escarpment – a dramatic geological formation stretching across East Africa.

  • Gol Mountains – rugged, remote, and culturally rich landscapes inhabited by Maasai communities.

  • Active volcanic vents and fumaroles within the crater, emitting smoke and heat — a reminder of the mountain’s living energy.

After exploring the fascinating crater and its unique formations, you’ll descend the mountain on a 4-hour trek back to the base, completing one of Tanzania’s most unforgettable adventures.

(This tour can be customized to include visits to Lake Natron waterfalls, Maasai cultural encounters, or birdwatching experiences around the lake.)
