Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park

Set at the foot of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak, Arusha National Park is a small yet stunningly diverse gem. It offers volcanic landscapes, lush rainforests, and magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.
The park’s highlights include the Ngurdoto Crater, often called the “Little Ngorongoro,” and the Momella Lakes, whose shimmering waters attract countless flamingos and other bird species.

Thanks to its proximity to Arusha town — only a 45-minute drive away — the park is often the first stop on many Northern Circuit itineraries. Despite its size, Arusha National Park delivers a surprisingly rich and varied safari experience, combining game drives, canoeing, forest walks, and Mount Meru climbs.

Wildlife

Arusha National Park is home to a diverse mix of herbivores, primates, and predators. Visitors can encounter elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, waterbucks, hippos, warthogs, and an impressive variety of antelope species.
The park is particularly known for its black-and-white colobus monkeys and baboons swinging through the forest canopy. While lions are absent, leopards and spotted hyenas are occasionally sighted, adding to the park’s quiet sense of wildness.

Walking and Climbing

For adventurers, the park offers an exceptional Mount Meru trekking experience (4,566 m). The trail leads through a range of breathtaking landscapes — from open plains and dense montane forests to moorlands and volcanic deserts.
All treks must be accompanied by an armed ranger, ensuring safety as wildlife roams freely along the routes. From Mount Meru’s summit, climbers are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the crater below and, on clear mornings, Mount Kilimanjaro rising majestically in the distance.
